I need to buy a recording of Un Ballo in Maschera. Anyone have any recommendations? I’ll gladly listen to your advice. I can’t believe I don’t own a copy already; maybe I borrowed a library copy the last time we performed the work. (Yes, I’ve only done it once before.)

Opening night of this opera will be on my birthday. How about that? I’m going to be 29, 39 … um … older than I am now. (It’s fairly foolish of me to even think I could be 29 or 39 when I have a 23 year old son, eh?)

  1. I love the 1966 live recording with Carlo Bergonzi and Leonie Rysanek, but I’m a great Bergonzi fan and love him in this role.  I’ve also got a video of him in it at about the same time with Stella and a terrific baritone whose name I can’t remember.  I’ve got the Domingo/Ricciarelli (cond Abbado) recording on CD as well, which is OK.

Thanks! I’ll look the CD and video up. I’d go with “great and love him in this role” and “terrific baritone” over “OK” any time. :-)

  3. OK is probably a bit unfair.  It is Abbado after all and Domingo’s in fine voice.  The sound quality is better as well in the more modern recording.  I’d still take Bergonzi (plus the women are terrific in the older recordings).
