It is hard to go beyond your public. If they are satisfied with cheap performance, you will not easily arrive at better. If they know what is good, and require it, you will aspire and burn until you achieve it. But from time to time, in history, men are born a whole age too soon.

Hmmm. Terry Teachout writes good things about the Sweeney Todd production. Could I have been wrong? Is Patti Lupone really high quality when it comes to tuba playing? I’m willing to admit I’m not perfect, and I could have misjudged the whole thing.

I do wonder.

Alas, I’ll probably never see the show; I have no money to fly to NYC, and I have even less money to pay for a Broadway show. Ah well. I guess I’ll have to take his word for it.
