I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the manmade sound never equalled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.

(My chair sponsor, when I was English hornist of San Jose Symphony, told me he chose me because there was no bagpipe in the orchestra and I came the closest. I was never certain how to take that. I actually do like the sound of a bagpipe … but suggesting that my English horn playing came close to that sound? Hmmm.)
