Well, he’s not exactly connected to the sort of thing I do, but he IS a “blast from the past” for me. I was a huge Cat Stevens fan when I was in high school. So happy birthday Cat Stevens, now known as Yusef Islam, but Cat Stevens to this girl.

So I’m working on reeds today, and thinking about cane and how it’s considered an invasive species in California. It is one pesky weed, this arundo donax we use to make our pesky reeds.

I loved chemistry, loved math. Musicians love math; all my children and grandchildren are good at math,” Kaplan said. “I thought, ‘I’ll apply to Juilliard for a scholarship, and I’ll apply to City College for chemical engineering.’ I got accepted at the City College and then got the scholarship at Juilliard and decided to go there. I was there for five years and ended up with a master’s degree.”
