I had wanted to go into music or music education. But my parents were like… “NO.” And yeah, I understand them; you have to be a prodigy (or a prodigy in progress) in order to be successful in a career in music… and you need lessons… and (in my case) you have to be rich in order to buy a good oboe, and maintain a supply of freaking good reeds

  1. I hope you don’t have to be a prodigy. I hope you can be just reasonably talented and make up for the rest with discipline and determination? Maybe some love? Anyone? Or should I be giving up now? (I’m not going to by the way… I really am quite strong on that determination part)

Certainly for education you don’t. That’s not to say I think it’s easy to be a teacher by any means; you need to be able to teach. Trust me, I’ve had enough poor teachers in my time (happily, not music teachers so much) to be quite sure that not everyone can.
