Gramophone Magazine, self-declared as “the world’s best classical music magazine”, news:

A survey by the authoritative British professional magazine Gramophone shows that international music critics regard Amsterdam’s Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest as the best orchestra in the world.

On the magazine’s list of the world’s 20 best orchestras, the Berliner Philharmoniker came second, followed, at some distance, by the Wiener Philharmoniker and the London Symphony Orchestra in third and fourth place.

In a commentary, Gramophone writes that The Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest and other orchestra’s on the list clearly distinguished themselves from many of today’s orchestras which all sound alike.

I read it here. So I’d like to see the entire top 20 list. Anyone have it?

  1. You know how weird it is to read Dutch words in an otherwise completely English text…
Anyway, I wonder how they made that list? Who would be able to tell which orchestra is ‘better’?

  2. I have no idea who can tell which orchestra is better, Eefje. It sounds like one of the requirements is to sound “different” than other orchestras. Hmmm. A really bad orchestra would sound different, too! ;-)

  3. There should be a Battle of the Orchestras, with each group playing under three different conductors and out of sight of the judges, whatcha think?

And the judges would have to be from different countries (kinda like the Olympics), and then eventually it would be broken out into chamber works and period instrumentation and…sorry, got ahead of myself there. :)

  4. I can see it now – the newest reality show – orchestras fighting their way up through the regional competitions to reach the international finals – the bad reeds, trying to keep the horn section away from the beer long enough to compete…

Is anyone still looking for a way to re-popularize classical music? Heck, it worked for ballroom dancing, right?

  5. I’m with Tim. And I can also see them having pyrotechnics, fake smoke, special lighting effects, and thigh-high skirts, right?

  6. Hah! Thigh-high skirts just eliminated me, Cooper!

You guys should get together and work on a show. I think you have something here.

  7. Well, I have good legs, and all, but I pretty much never wear thigh-high skirts. Well, I haven’t yet, anyhow.

  8. Hmmm. First time for everything? Or maybe not.
