I’m not having great success with reeds. My EH “issue” is that the pitch sags horribly on the G and G# above the staff. If I fix that issue, the reed is far too sharp. So I’m in ReedAgony™ and when I get to a certain place I know the best thing to do is step away for a while. So I am.

For those of you who are tired of hearing of my insecurities and reed woes, you can, after watching the videos in earlier blog entries, move on to Howarth Oboes:

  1. I had the same problem with high G’s and G#’s and finally got a new bocal that helped immensely. Probably not the solution you are looking for, but one solution at least!

  2. I’ve used this bocal for years and have never had this problem. I also checked two other bocals and have that same issue. So I’m guessing the bocal isn’t the answer, but of course maybe it is and all these bocals are no good ..? (2 Dallas and 1 Symer)

In any case, I do have a reed that works for this weekend, and a backup that would get me through.

I think I’m going to try a thinner shape and wind reeds a bit longer too. We’ll see!
