We are not entertainers. We are musicians.

  1. I’m not crazy about Muti’s statement here, although I’ll grant that it’s missing a lot of context and might not represent, by itself, what he meant.

But musicians need to recognize — and embrace! — the understanding that what they do is “entertainment”, as well as other things too (conversation with History, perhaps?).

I’ve been to several local concerts around my neighborhood where the performers really seemed to be avoiding any sort of eye contact or interaction with the audience. That is always disappointing, when you go out to take part in an experience and then feel like it’s no different from putting on a CD.
