Of the six surviving Bach motets for four to eight voices, some for double choir, “Lobet den Herrn” is for simple SATB chorus. Each part can be heard contributing to the fugal counterpoint, beginning with the rising arpeggio of the opening motive. Unlike some of Bach’s other motets, a continuo part was included with “Lobet den Herrn.” There is some question about the authenticity of the piece since it came to light only in the nineteenth century, although it survives in Bach’s handwriting and seems characteristic of his contrapuntal style in so many ways. It ends with a joyful Alleluia.
