Silly oboe.. stop breaking and needing repairs….

  1. A “teachable moment” last night at youth orchestra sectionals… one student’s (rental) fiddle was buzzing, whereupon I investigated and discovered that so many seams were open, the only thing holding the back onto the instrument was the chinrest clamp! Ah, the joys of student equipment.

  2. Student instruments are so tough to deal with, too much of the time. I try to explain to parents, as they don’t often understand. I tell them it’s like playing with a tennis racket that has a gaping hole in it. But mostly I hand the student my oboe and suddenly he/she sounds SO much better. Of course then I see in the student’s eyes —and frequently the parent’s eyes as well— this “Oh, Patty isn’t as good as I thought!” look. Hah!
