According to a friend of mine in the orchestra, the NY Phil didn’t pick anyone at their recent EH audition of a week or two ago.

Gosh, who do they think they are — Chicago?

  1. Or San Francisco… although more often they pick someone and then don’t give them tenure.

It annoys me so much to hear about orchestras doing that. I seriously doubt that there was NOBODY they heard who was capable of doing the job. It’s very hard not to conclude that they wanted to give the job to someone in particular, but that someone didn’t make the finals.

I don’t know how their contract reads, but maybe it ought to be possible (especially for a solo position like EH) to offer someone a week’s trial before committing to an entire probationary year? Then again, that’s what probation is for, after all; to see how the player performs under real circumstances and how the fit is with the group and the conductor. IF you are actually open to filling the position, that is.

  2. Yep to all you wrote!
