Max Reger: Nachtlied
Calmus

Evening song
The night has fallen,
And we should rest;
God is there, to care for us
By his good will,
So that we settle
In his company and blessing,
To maintain the peace.

Father, drive the evil spirits
Far away from us;
Keep the night watch;
Be our protector;
Shield both body and soul
Under your wings;
Send us your angels!

Let us go to sleep
With good thoughts,
Happily awaken
And never waver from you;
Let us, with rearing,
Focus our deeds and words
On your glory!

Jessie Seymour Irvine: The Lord’s My Shepherd, arr. Stefan Schuck
Sirventes Berlin; Stefan Schuck, Conductor

A young (21 years old!) oboist won the principal position in the Vienna Opera. (I read the news on the Vienna Phil Facebook page.) You can read about him here.

Melchior Franck: Nunc dimittis
Sirventes Berlin; Stefan Schuck, Conductor

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Schütz: Aller Augen & Vater unser
Ensemble Musica Sacra Dresden: Karl Hänsel, Conductor

San Francisco Opera had second oboe auditions this week. They were scheduled for four days, and I can’t imagine how exhausted both the players and the committee are at this point! But they have a winner.

Congratulations to Gabriel Young! I look forward to hearing you play next year. (Yes, we have season tickets again.)

Marcello, in 2015 (From YouTube: “19-year-old Gabriel Young (winner of the program’s concerto competition) in the final concert of the 2015 National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.”):

Here he is, playing the Mozart, in 2016:

And the Strauss. Memorized.

Obviously a fine, fine player! Very musical, which matters very much to me.

John Blow: Save me, O God
