From Delmar Williams: “Eric Varner Associate Professor of Bassoon at Lynn University and owner of Trevco-Varner Music, has died suddenly while on tour with his trio in Thailand. This is a terrible loss for the double reed community. If I get any further information I will post it.”

I have since heard that Dr. Varner died of a heart attack on October 4. I know there are many who are devastated by this news. He was only 45 years old

I was the “bassoon expert” who sat on the jury for his audition for the Principal Bassoon position in the Windsor Symphony in 2002 or 2003. I was also on the committee that heard his audition for the second bassoon position for Michigan Opera Theatre in 2003 or so. Subsequently, I was a roommate of his at the Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camp.

I can say that the world needs more Eric Varners! He was a terrific person, and an even better bassoonist (if that’s possible)! May he rest in peace, a dear soul and a very good man!

  2. Thank you so much for your comment, Spencer. (I’m sorry I’m only seeing it now — I’ve been negligent in checking oboeinsight.) Such a sad loss.
