It’s going to take me a while to process the opera. I need, in fact, to see it again. But for now let me say that it was well worth the expense (this cost more than anything we’ve ever attended) and I do give it a thumbs up.
But I have a few things I’d love to have nixed. The beginning of each act, for instance. But I don’t want to say more right now, other than to say “let the orchestra tell it” and leave it there for the moment.
Now I want to read more about Oppenheimer and about the event itself.
The end of the first act was a stunning one. The “chills up the spine” sort of thing.
Overall it was a mighty opera, powerful and thought provoking and painful.
More later. Maybe after I sleep on it. (But see how I am not giving anything away at this point? I’m nice that way.)
In some sort of crude sense, which no vulgarity, no humor, no overstatement can quite extinguish, the physicists have known sin; and this is a knowledge which they cannot lose.
