I sit down to the piano regularly at nine-o’clock in the morning and Mesdames les Muses have learned to be on time for that rendezvous.

-Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, quoted in Schafer, British Composers in Interview (1963)

Nutcracker opening night was last night. I was surprised at the small audience, but oh well! The traffic getting to the hall would have made me think we had quite the crowd, but I guess they were downtown for Christmas in the Park and André Rieu (at the arena). Ah yes, Johann Strauss played by women and men dressed to the nines (the women in ball gowns) … in an ice rink. That’s the ticket! 😉

  1. I have heard some of Tchaikovsky’s more deservedly forgotten
music.  He was wrong: the muses did not always arrive on time, or
even in time.  Usually they did, but far too often not.

Needless to say, I put up quotes I sometimes disagree with, so hearing that you disagree with the composer is not something with which this oboist will take issue! Tchaik is definitely not one of my favorites, although I do enjoy some of his works. I just like to post what I find that has something to do with my current work situation.

5 Nut services completed, 9 to go. I try very hard to avoid the music outside of the pit, but shopping centers and TV advertisements like to mock me!
