… is a day I’m spending at UCSC. Not a bad place to spend a full day, if you ask me. We’ve had a lot of rain, including a bit this morning, but right now there is blue sky above. Woo hoo!

This morning I first exercised for a small amount of time at “my” club, then went to “my” coffee place, and from then on I’ve been on one of “my” campuses. (See how I seem to own the world? Keep that in mind, in case I see you in possession of a good reed! I’ll probably claim it as my own!) Right now I’m eating the largest chicken burrito ever. It’s incredibly tasty too. And to think it’s being eaten at the Hungry Slug. Yes, really, that’s the name of this place on campus.

I’ve also taught Sara and then was able to meet and work with a very good (very, very good!) high school oboist who is checking out different schools. I always love meeting new oboe students. If any readers are looking for colleges please know I’m happy to meet you and have a bit of a lesson (although it’s more of a “you play for me, I’ll say some stuff” kind of thing since we don’t do the exact kind of lesson I would teach had you been working on things I had assigned). Whether or not you are choosing one of “my” campuses, I definitely recommend meeting and playing for the oboe instructors at each school to which you apply; the student-teacher “thing” is one of the most important parts of your college experience if you are a music major!

Anyway, what a beautiful and fun day. Now I get an hour break, and then it’s off to Sara’s recital rehearsal. Exercise. Coffee. Teaching. Chicken Burrito. Tailleferre and Stravinsky.

Can’t get much better than this! Unless we could add a Giants win to the mix. But they aren’t playing today, so oh well.

Oh … and then there’s this
Dan, Jameson and I went to the “Mostly Mollicone” concert last night. It was really an all Mollicone concert if you don’t count the poetry used in his songs. I enjoyed it. A lot! I was especially impressed to hear UCSC colleague, Brian Staufenbiel, sing. He has a great voice, is quite musical, and the songs were wonderful. What a fine, fine night!

Now back to my lunch/dinner burrito. 😉

Perhaps all music, even the newest, is not so much something discovered as something that re-emerges from where it lay buried in the memory, inaudible as a melody cut in a disc of flesh. A composer lets me hear a song that has always been shut up silent within me.
