(Women, you can ignore this one.)
Seriously … this is from a Men’s mag. Where men learn to be better men. Whew.
Here’s the list:
1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
2. Johann Sebastian Bach, The Goldberg Variations
3. Antonio Vivaldi, The Four Seasons
4. Georges Bizet, Carmen
5. Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral)
6. George Frederic Handel, Messiah
7. Igor Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring
8. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Missa Papae Marcelli
9. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Piano Concerto No. 1
10. Dmitri Shostakovich, String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor
So men … off to the record store with you!
What, no Mahler? And couldn’t they have picked a better Mozart piece?
Okay, I’m being a tad nitpicky. Can’t expect to see all one’s favorites on a top ten list. Nice to see a nice smorgasboard here, something from each major era. I’m especially pleased to see Palestrina and Shostakovich on the list.
Yeah, all of us would have different lists, I’m sure, but I was impressed that it wasn’t somebody’s “I loved these when I played in high school band” lists (Holst Planets and the like). So there’s that.
