Are you searching for the “best student oboe”? Well, this site gives recommendations. Please please please please please talk to your oboe teacher first. Do not trust a website. Do not trust a friend. Do not trust a music store. Shoot, you don’t even have to trust me (unless I’m your teacher).
Okay?
And remember; if the price seems unbelievable, the oboe probably will be unbelievable as well. But not in a good way.
I cannot believe this guy! I cannot believe his picks! I looked at his site and he is a “composer.” How dare he publish best picks for student oboes? What a bad, bad direction he is headed!
It’s aggravating, isn’t it? Sigh.
I’m going to guess, too, that this guy gets some sort of a percentage of money from selling instruments. I could be wrong, but that’s my guess.
Interesting that one oboe was described as “rough and tumble” and strong enough to hold up to the marching band. Hmmmmm…..marching oboes. I guess we’ll have to start looking for marching bassoons and celli.
Heh … maybe so, Bill.
Scary thought.
Hi,
I’m the author of the list in question. After becoming aware of some legitimate concerns voiced here, I’ve gone back with our editors and revised the list in order to be more clear in the language, as well as re-constructing the list and picks in a more understandable way. I’ve started to solicit requests for further revision if anyone has alternatives, but please feel free to make suggestions here and I’ll try to either incorporate them into the revised list, or create a separate best oboe list at a different price range. Here’s the link to the revision:

Hi Dan,
I’m so glad you decided to improve the list! I would also include the Fossati Tiery oboe, as I have a colleague who tried that and said it was quite good.
I frequently have my students buy the MCW oboe. Maybe it’s more than some students might want to spend, but why spend less only to replace an oboe in a year? Best to buy something better to begin with!
Cheers-
Patty
