We are going to band orientation for [name here] tonight to pick his instrument. I had assumed he would choose percussion, trumpet, or sax. But [name here] never fails to surprise me. He wants to play the oboe.

  1. Robert E. Harris

Our grandson, at the start of 6th grade (middle school) informed his parents that he was going to learn to play the double bass. Now, two and a half years later, he is composing, taking lessons in composing, piano, and double bass and learning to play the bassoon. He had never shown any interest in music that anyone noticed before all this. Now he says he will be the soloisst in a concerto with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony by the time he is a senior in high school.

Watch out when a kid starts in a school music program. Strange and wonderful things can happen.

  2. I love it, Robert! Thanks for sharing the story. And may your grandson do wonderful, musical things!
