I once took a photo shoes worn by the oboe and flute sections of the opera to show the differences between us. My flute pitpals were wearing shiny strappy, high heeled kinds of shoes. My oboe colleague and I were wearing plain and simple flats. Now I realize not all oboists and flutists are like that, but I joke about the fancy flutes and plain oboes a lot.

… and now here’s a video that perhaps shows you the difference between singers and oboists, and maybe explains why I had to race out and find a top to wear to a fancy “Hollywood style” party last night because I sure didn’t have anything in the closet that would work for that! (But no, not all oboists wear jeans when performing.)

Irene Dalis will be stepping down from OSJ. I read it here.

“She is the iconic San Jose cultural figure; there’s nobody to touch her,” said Andrew Bales, general director of Symphony Silicon Valley.” She aspired to be among the world’s greats and achieved it, then came back to set a standard for San Jose that had not been set before. It’s a spectacular legacy.”

It will be difficult to replace Miss Dalis. I am hopeful they will find someone who has a great knowledge of how an opera company is run, has had the appropriate experience in the big world of opera, and perhaps even raises the opera to an even higher level. I know it can happen. It will just take the right person.
