I sometimes have students sight read. I should do it more frequently, truth be told. It is quite revealing.

One student, I learned, has to work very hard to figure out rhythm. It doesn’t always come naturally.

I learned that a couple of my students are excellent sight readers. Turns out they weren’t really been practicing much and are pretty much sight reading lessons.

For some students expression comes quickly and even while sight reading they be very expressive. For others expression comes long after learning the notes.

I highly recommend you pull out some sight reading if you are a teacher, and see how your students handle it. You might learn, as I recently did, that a few students have been pulling the wool over your eyes, so to speak.
