David McGill, principal bassoon of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 17 years, will leave in August to accept a full-time teaching position at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, the CSO announced Monday.
McGill has held the title since in 1997, when he was appointed by Daniel Barenboim, then the orchestra’s music director.
“Teaching has always been a great love of mine, and the rigors of performing have precluded me pursuing this noble profession as much as I would like,” McGill said in the CSO statement.

I can’t embed the video here on the blog, but if you click on this link you can hear Eugene Izotov talk about the Strauss and play a bit as well. Quite wonderful!

Many thanks to my friend and colleague Pam for bringing this to my attention.

Eugene Izotov will be performing this on May 15, 16 and 17. with Chicago and De Waart.
