Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
Amen.
English translation:
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
Maestro Ashkenazy, now 81 years old, is interviewed by Zsolt Bognár in a series created by Peter Hobbs. Such a fun listen! And what a charming man.
“I learned it, I better play it.” Gotta love that.
It’s quite fascinating to hear him talk about the different approach he had in the Soviet Union.
“If you go for fame and financial development, you have a problem. Just think of the music. If you play well, try again, try again. Play well. Don’t go for the career just go for the music you’re playing.”
