… at least in my opinion.

Miriam Hanika – Das selbe alte Lied

Translation (rough, I’m sure):

It’s always the same song, the same melody,
That travels through our countries,
About love over hate, about peace over war,
The same song over and over again.
It’s the same blue sky, the same white cloud,
Who flees from the mountains,
The same long-awaited light, the same dark shadow,
The same old song.
It’s the same crazy things that separate and unite us,
The same difference,
Which we always think exists in us, the same old song.
It’s the same high wall, made of the same old stones,
That stands at our borders,
Often smashed and just as often rebuilt,
The same song over and over again.
It’s the same power structures, the same old rules,
After which we lose,
Because we envy instead of giving, because we are silent instead of talking,
Copying instead of composing.
It’s the same old words, spoken far too often,
And yet dried up in the sand,
Words could change us, but only if you live them,
The same old song.
It’s always the same song, but if no one sings it,
Then it will be quiet,
And when it has faded away, then we may sing,
A new song for two.
