Sven-Erik Bäck: Du som gick före oss
VOCES8

Okay … I just have to say I LOVE this one.

A Swedish hymn ‘Du som gick före oss’ by Sven-Erik Bäck, filmed at St Davids Cathedral, Wales.

It’s based around a melody which uses all 12 semitones of the octave, and is no. 74 in the standard Swedish Psalmboken.

Text by Olov Hartman:

Du som gick före oss
längst in i ångesten,
hjälp oss att finna dig,
Herre, i mörkret.

Du som bar all vår skuld
in i förlåtelsen,
du är vårt hjärtas fred,
Jesus, för evigt.

Du som med livets bröd
går genom tid och rum,
giv oss för varje dag,
Kristus, det brödet.

Du som går före oss
ut i en trasig värld,
sänd oss med fred och bröd,
Herre, i världen.

Translation:

You who went before us
deep in anxiety,
help us find you,
Lord, in the dark.

You who bore all our guilt
into forgiveness,
you are the peace of our hearts,
Jesus, forever.

You as with the bread of life
goes through time and space,
give us for every day,
Christ, that bread.

You who go before us
out into a broken world,
send us with peace and bread,
Lord, in the world.

William Byrd: Ave Verum
VOCES8

TEXT
Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine,
vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine,
cuius latus perforatum fluxit sanguine:
esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine.

O Iesu dulcis, O Iesu pie, O Iesu, fili Mariae.
Miserere mei. Amen.

TRANSLATION
Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary,
who has truly suffered,
was sacrificed on the cross for mortals,
whose pierced side flowed with blood:
Be for us a foretaste [of Heaven]
in the final judgement.

Oh sweet, oh pious, oh Jesus, son of Mary,
Have mercy on me. Amen.

Althea Talbot-Howard: Troparion (Christos Anesti)

Today is Orthodox Easter, so this seems pretty appropriate! No, no choir today. But I think this will do … don’t you?!

From the YouTube page:
This piece incorporates the Greek Orthodox Paschal (Easter) chant in the Dorian mode as its A1 and A2 sections, complemented by original material in the B1 & B2 sections.

It is dedicated to ‘Shiloh’, which is a prophetic name of Christ from Jacob’s prophecy of the future in Genesis 49:10…
“The sceptre will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until [Shiloh] comes,
and the obedience of the nations is his.”

This performance was given with Dominic Saunders at West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge, on 4 August 2019.

The sheet music can be purchased via my website (www.althea-composer.com). Please send a message via the Contact Page.

Althea is playing a Mollenhauer Modern Alto (Treble) Recorder in Pearwood, with an E-extension bottom joint.
